First of all, you should know that each type of baby carrier and each brand will have their own usage and safety instructions. Most of the baby carrier brands have published safety instructions (written or in images and videos) on their websites and they provide manuals with their products.

So, if you are not sure about something related to your baby carrier, the first thing you should do is to refer to the official manual; if you can’t find an answer there, contact the supplier. What we will mention in this post are not official instructions for any specific baby carrier; instead, they are general safety practices that one should pay attention while babywearing.

Having said that, we can now talk about general safety concerns and things to pay attention that are common in almost all types of baby carriers.

IMPORTANCE of SAFETY
Let’s start with why safety is utmost important in babywearing. Babies are the most precious beings in our life and parents should do anything possible to keep them safe. They are not like adults or grown up kids, they are so defenseless and fragile. If proper care is not taken, they may suffer injuries or health problems. Therefore, in all babywearing practices, safety of the baby should come first and both the manufacturer and the parent has to ensure that.

WEIGHT LIMITS
Every baby carrier is designed for a specific weight range and that is clearly mentioned in the manual or on the product page. For example, if a carrier is meant to be used for children between 7 to 30 lbs (3.2 – 13.6 kg) then you shouldn’t use it for a baby under 7 lbs or above 30 lbs. Because, this is the safety zone that is determined after a lot of research and tests.

source: didymos.de

THE FIRST USE
If you are using a baby carrier for the first time, you should be extra careful until you get used to it. Before the first use, make sure that the carrier is ready to use. To do that, check all the buckles, straps, waists, adjustments and fabric are in place and secure. Especially the critical parts, if any, should be examined carefully. (Actually, this should be done before each use.) If possible, get help from someone else as well; something you may not see may be visible to others.

Put the carrier on without the baby a few times until you feel comfortable. Make sure that you are holding the baby above a soft ground or seat while getting her into the carrier. Once the baby is inside, make the necessary adjustments and control the security. Practice at home for a while before going out.

Check your child constantly and ensure that her face is not pressed to your body or to the carrier. Always keep sufficient space for her to breathe.

CARRYING POSITIONS
There are a couple of carrying positions available for different types of baby carriers and this information is also provided in the manuals or product pages. Front carry, hip carry, back carry and some variations of them are the most popular ones. Starting from your first try, make a habit of carrying your baby in the correct positions depending on the baby carrier you are using. If a certain position is not recommended, stay away from it.

Never forget that the best babywearing experience is the safest one.

That’s all about baby carrying safety for now, we will talk about other related topics in the coming posts.

Baby Carrier Safety

In this post, I want to talk about a recent article that I stumbled upon on the website of Baby Carrier Industry Alliance, which gives tips and information about babywearing and baby carrier safety in general.

The first thing that makes babywearing such an important issue is that it allows parents to keep their baby very close to them. Using a baby carrier, especially front carriers like slings and wraps, your baby is always in your sight and you can nurse or kiss it anytime you want. Permanent communication is established between you and the baby, in this way.

It is true that when a baby is worn, it rests in the safest place possible and enjoys that feeling. Babies need ongoing care and nursing in their first couple of months, and that makes babywearing important.

source: balboababy.com

One common thing in all front baby carriers is that the carrying position is the same as if the baby is carried by arms. This is absolutely important in terms of bonding. Below, you can read about general babywearing safety tips.

Once you get the baby inside the carrier, before moving on, check its position to make sure that it will not shift considerably. The baby needs to be properly settled within the carrier.

Instructions supplied by the manufacturer are your first source of wearing the baby safely. Refer to manuals, videos and other type of mediums to fully understand how the carrier is to be used.

Pressing the face of your baby to your body is something you should avoid; you should see its face. Covering baby’s face is also not advised.

If the baby is small, like under 4 months, check it often and make sure all is fine.

To ensure a healthy breathing of the baby, check the position of its chin and chest. Baby’s chin shouldn’t be pressed to baby’s chest.

If the baby was born below the normal weight or in the case of twins or illnesses, consulting an expert before using a baby carrier is the best idea.

So, while the baby carriers make life easier and fun for both parents and babies, the above safety concerns should always be followed.

I am sure you heard about the latest news going around about baby carrier recalls by some of the most popular baby slings due to some previously reported baby deaths. 14 deaths, 12 of them under 4-months, in total were associated with this type of baby sling carrier. The big risk of suffocation is what caused this issue.

Now that over 1 million of baby slings are recalled, The US Consumer Product Safety Commission published official directions about how to wear the baby sling and carry the baby in a correct way. This is to reduce, if not totally eliminate, the risk of suffocation of the infants.

Below you can see the images of the correct carriage directions for baby slings.

In the correct carrying position, note that that face of the baby looks upward, visible by the parent, and no risk of suffocation since it will breath easily. On the other case, if the baby is directed towards the chest of the parent, then its face will be covered and cannot breathe easily, resulting in a lack of airing.

Carrying the baby at a very low position is also not suggested, rendering it uncomfortable and as a result, creating a risk of suffocation.

Creating a pressure on the baby, especially on its face while in the carrier is extremely dangerous and should be avoided by all means. Once you feel it becomes uncomfortable for the baby or for you, just give a break and get it out of the carrier, so that both of you take some breath and rest for a while.

Yamo Baby Carrier Instructions

Before using a baby carrier, you should always refer to its official instructions and use it accordingly. This is safer for both yourself and your baby. Because you might have some serious problems or injuries if you do not use the baby carrier as described in the instructions.

Most of the times, the instructions manual come directly with the baby carrier model you buy as a piece of paper or like, though sometimes it doesn’t.
